Case study · Brand identity and website

A dream you can check into.

Rêve, French for dream, is a small collection of design-led villas in Goa. I built its brand from the ground up, the mark, colour and type, and then designed the whole website with it. After launch, site traffic rose 60% and bookings 12%. Spend a day there: the clock in the corner keeps time.

07:30 · The brief

Somewhere to slow down, before anyone arrives.

Rêve is a collection of design-led villas in Goa: Viraam Estate, The Fable and Palette, with a fourth, Sanctuary, unveiling soon. Each one is a home rather than a hotel room, with heritage Goan architecture, vintage furniture and a garden to sit in.

It came to me as a name and a feeling, with no brand behind it. The feeling was already in the stays: lamplight, jaali screens, long mornings. The work was to give it a face and a voice, and then a website that moves at the same pace.

I established the brand, the logo, colour and typography, and then used it to design the whole website, desktop and mobile.

09:00 · The mark

A flower at the door.

The mark is a four-petal flower in brass with a laterite heart: warm, a little ornamental, and simple enough to hold up in a browser tab. On the site it does more than sign the page. It opens sections and sets out the values on the about page.

  1. 01 · Four petalsSoft, scalloped petals in brass, set in a cross.
  2. 02 · A light heartThe centre is cut out of the petals, so the flower keeps a cream heart even on forest green.
  3. 03 · Five dotsA cross of laterite dots, joined by hairlines.
  4. 04 · The wordmarkRÊVE in a flared serif with its circumflex kept, and ESCAPES & EXPERIENCES set wide beneath.

10:30 · Colour

A palette you can see from the verandah.

Five colours, all of them already in the stays: forest from the gardens, brass from the lamplight, sand and linen from the shore and the whitewashed walls, and laterite, the red stone Goa is built from. Each one is paired here with one of Rêve's photographs.

12:00 · Type

Three typefaces, one voice.

A flared display serif for the moments that should feel like an invitation, a clean grotesk for everything you read, and a book serif for the words you press. Hover a typeface to find it in the section beside it.

Quiche Flare

01 / 03

A flared serif with a soft, hand-cut edge, used large and sparingly. On the site it names each section, and it names the places: the about page's locations carousel sets the villages around the stays like this.

Essence of Rêve

Rooted in the French word for dream, RÊVE is a collection of design-led homes for those who feel deeply and live slowly.

14:00 · The website

A website that takes its time.

The brand became the site. Every page sits on linen with forest type, the photographs do most of the talking, and the layout leaves room the way the villas do. Book Now never leaves the header, so the slowness never gets in the way of a booking.

Planned from a sun lounger.

A stay is often chosen on a phone, so the phone got its own design rather than a squeezed desktop: the homepage, the villa pages, the menu and the amenities sheets were all drawn at 393px.
